Chairman of the Sussex Heritage Trust, Simon Knight, visited West Dean College on Monday 7 December 2020 to present CEO Alex Barron and the team with their Public & Community Award, in recognition of the work involving extensive conservation and repair of the roof to the House.
West Dean College, home to West Dean College of Arts and Conservation, is a grade II* listed building of cultural and historical significance. It houses a unique Collection and Archive that point to the remarkable story and heritage of the building that today inspires students locally and from across the globe to come and study at the College.
In 2013 Jane Jones-Warner Associates were commissioned to carry out a condition survey of West Dean House which highlighted that the condition of the roofs to the house were in a very poor state and needed repair. Water ingress had been occurring for many years, largely through the parapet gutters and internal sumps, and the blotting paper effect of the fabric could no longer conceal the water and this had become visible internally.
The roof repair works were divided into three phases with the first two phases completing earlier this year. The third is to be programmed within the next 5 years.
